Hell Is Not A Biblical Doctrine

In this article, I am grouping the translation of "Hell" into two categories.

- The Old Testament Translation.
Sheol and Hades were translated "Hell" in the Old Testament. Sheol and Hades are words which means grave by definition. A place for the dead. David went there, Jacob went there, all the old testament prophets went there when they died.

- The New Testament Translation.
Gehenna was translated as "Hell" in the New Testament. Gehenna which was referred to as "the valley of slaughter" by the Jews, was a place were rebellious Jews were thrown into.

THE OLD TESTAMENT TRANSLATION
It is very surprising but pertinent for you to note that people like David, Abraham, Joseph etc never heard the term "Hell". Throughout the entirety of human history in the Old Testament, the entire human race were never threatened with eternal torment in Hell. Let's travel through human history.

ADAM AND EVE
Many of us are taught to believe that eternal torment in Hell awaits nearly all of Adam's descendants. How can this be? Would it be fair to receive a punishment you had no idea of? Why didn't God tell Adam and Eve what awaited them? That is because God never planned and isn't planning of doing anything like that to his own creation. God did give a warning, he said;

"You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden- except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat it's fruit, you are sure to die."

CAIN AND ABEL
A case about the murder of a brother. If eternal torment for the human race was on God's mind, would this not be the perfect time to reveal it. Yet, God never mentioned it and Cain never heard of it.

NOAH AND THE FLOOD
During Noah's time, we find that God observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil- this broke his heart. And so, if endless torment was part of God's plan. Wouldn't Noah's time be the perfect time to reveal it? We know that it isn't there.

We could go on and on, we will find that there was simply no record or insinuation of eternal torment in the Old testament. From Genesis to Malachi, there is no record of endless torment. So how did it get into the bible?

The Old Testament word that was translated as Hell, only means grave by definition, and it is where everyone in the Old Testament went when they died - good or evil. Jacob went there (Gen 37:35). As a matter of fact, the modern translation of the bible no longer translates the word "Sheol" to be "Hell" anymore. Thus, the Old Testament does not contain "Hell" on any of its pages.

THE NEW TESTAMENT TRANSLATION
Gehenna was translated "Hell" in the New Testament. Gehenna appears only 12 times in the Bible. It appeared in the gospel 11 times and the last in James. Jesus was warning the Jews of impending destruction both nationally and individually. He was referring to the Old Testament prophecy of that place in Jeremiah 7:32. We can also see that the last time the word "Gehenna" appeared in Mathew, just three verses later, he said the judgment will fall on that very generation. [Mat 23:33, 23:36].

Gehenna was initially where Israelites and followers of Ba'al and other gods including Moloch{Molech}, sacrificed their children by fire. (2 Chr 28:3 , 33:6).

Jeremiah 7:31
"They have built pagans shrines at Topeth, the garbage dump in the valley of Ben-Hinnom(Gehenna), and there they burn their sons and daughters in the fire. I have never commanded such a horrible deed; it never even crossed my mind to command such a thing?"

Think about this

We are God's creation and therefore his children. If God described the burning of children in Topeth a horrible deed, why will He burn his own creation (children) in Hell for the rest of eternity.

Jeremiah 7:32
"So beware, for the time is coming, says the LORD, when that garbage dump will no longer be called "Topeth" or the valley of Ben-Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter. They will bury their bodies in Topeth until there is no more room for them"

It happened that the Jews abhorred that place. So they threw into that place, rebellious Jews and Children. Whenever Jesus mentioned "Gehenna" in the new testament, he was referring to the Old Testament prophecy about that place.

I do not deny that God will judge the world, nor do I wish to make light of His judgment. I am only challenging the myth and belief that His judgment on sin and unbelief is eternal torment in Hell and never ending separation from God.

THE TWELVE GEHENNA PASSAGES

- Matthew 5:22.
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of Hell[Gehenna].

-Mathew 5:29
So if your eye- even your good eye causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into Hell[Gehenna].

-Mathew 5:30
And if your hand- even your stronger hard causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into Hell [Gehenna].

- Mathew 10:28
Don't be afraid of those want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul[nephesh] and body in Hell [Gehenna].

-Mathew 18:9
And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It's better to enter eternal(aionian) life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of Hell [Gehenna].

- Luke 12:5
But I'll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into Hell[Gehenna]. Yes, he's the one to fear.

- Mathew 23:15
What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then turn that person into twice the child of Hell[Gehenna] you yourself are!

- Mathew 23:33
Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of Hell[Gehenna].

- Mark 9:43
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter eternal(aionian) life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of Hell[Gehenna].

- Mark 9:45
If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter eternal(aionian) life with only one foot than to be thrown into Hell[Gehenna] with two feet.

- Mark 9:45
And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It's better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into Hell[Gehenna].

James 3:6
And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by Hell[Gehenna] itself.
